His vase collection of Trilobites gained national honor in 1985 when the Smithsonian borrowed the collection that was returned this year with over 200 million people visiting the exhibit at the USNMH. Tom has a rock shop in Locust Grove, Ohio near Serpent Mound Meteor Crater. In 1997, he began his work on the crater’s geology and now conducts workshops for universities and scientists within the impact site. Wendell Humphrey is a Shoshone-Bannock man born on the reservation in Fort Hall, Idaho. His childhood was spent away from the rez and most of his Native American family. Looking to reconnect with his family and his heritage after four years in the US Marine Corps, he first found a spiritual home with the Lakota people, with whom he became a sundancer. His spiritual practices today reflect those of his diverse teachers, while relying heavily on the Lakota traditions he has followed most of his adult life. About once per month, he runs Native American ceremonies on his Perry County property. He settled in Ohio after meeting his future wife, and worked first as a coal miner and then for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. In 1999, he began three years of court battles versus the state of Ohio. In a landmark decision, Wendell won the right for Native Americans to wear long hair according to their spiritual beliefs. It was the first time in Ohio history that six out of seven Ohio Supreme Court justices agreed in a majority decision. He retired from the prison system in 2005, and now spends his time making teepees and Native American arts and crafts. He also speaks to classes and youth groups and leads drum- and rattle-making workshops.
